Our task here was to insert a contemporary conference room with full teleconference capabilities into Jose Luis Sert’s historic Holyoke Center for Harvard’s use. We were able to capitalize on Sert’s original intent to filter southern light at the window plane. The intimate space was intended to be dark enough to televise, yet bright enough to serve multiple working functions, mitigated by the warmth of wood heat vents running along the window-wall, a wood frame for the oversized TV screen, and brown drapery curtains that darken the room for screen presentations during the day. We successfully balanced these elements with careful lighting choices and organized placement of furniture and accessories.
