Cambridge City Hall is a classic example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture, designed in 1888 by Longfellow, Alden & Harlow. It has lived many lives over the past century and a quarter, thanks to periodic restoration, updating, and related projects. A historic paint specialist was engaged to investigate wall and ceiling surfaces to excavate the original color set painted in the building.
In 2011, the original color set was researched and tested with new paint. In order to restore and keep consistent the architecture of the building, we worked carefully with a team of craftsmen who specialized in Romanesque Architecture. We rebuilt many architectural elements, repaired cracking surfaces, and brought the interior back to life. In another hundred years, Cantabrigians will be able to look back and be grateful for preservation of this cultural icon in the center of their city.
