This project sets communication in place for Harvard’s Alumni Association for global reach to its members. A new stair inserted into the active building provides connective tissue in the form of vertical circulation. Sunlight fills each floor, as offices, conference rooms and larger-scale program elements are held to the interior. Partitions on the interior are punctured with generous windows to allow light and views to flow inward. Artificial light intelligently bends from ceiling to wall, forming a hinge between two normally dissimilar planes.
The stair is capped with the building’s skylight, providing sun from the sixth floor down to the fourth floor. This porosity breaks down the physical walls and allows for daylight and views from all spaces out to the Boston skyline. The state-of-the-art audio-visual communications systems break down virtual walls, connecting Cambridge with New York, Los Angeles, or Beijing.
